Yukon Regional Geochemical Database 2003 - Stream sediment analyses

compiled by D. Hon

This CD includes 2 main directories. The first one, "New North Yukon RGS Data 2003", contains previously unreleased regional stream sediment geochemical digital data for northern Yukon collected between 1995 and 2001, as well as documentation files.

The second directory, "Yukon Digital Regional Geochemical Database 2003" contains the updated digital compilation of all government regional stream geochemical data for the Yukon, including the newly released data, as well as several associated documents. It does not include lake sediment surveys.

This CD supercedes "Yukon Regional Geochemical Database 2002", released in November 2002.

New North Yukon RGS data- 2003
The new data released on this CD is presented as a Microsoft Excel 2000 spreadsheet. It is only available in digital format; it has not been previously released by the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC). Three pertinent documentation files, provided by the GSC, describe data collection and analytical procedures. These include: Eagle Plains 1995, Eagle Plains 2000, and Northeast Yukon 2001. An additional file, titled "Background information" provides the context and history of these surveys. These four files are presented in Portable Document Format (PDF) and in Microsoft Word 2000.

Yukon Digital Regional Geochemical Database 2003
The digital compilation of Yukon-wide stream geochemical data is provided in Microsoft Excel 2000 format (.xls) and in ESRI ArcView Shapefile format (.shp). Accompanying documents are in Portable Document Format (PDF) and in Microsoft Word and Excel. These include Documentation, Table 1 - References, Table 2 - Analytical techniques and detection limits, and Table 3 - Statistics. If you don't have Adobe Acrobat Reader, please download the most recent version from the Adobe website at www.adobe.ca.

The data was originally captured in Geographic projection. It was then translated into an ESRI Shapefile and reprojected into Yukon Albers custom projection. The parameters for Yukon Albers projection are as follows:

Projection: Albers Equal Area Conic
Datum: NAD83
Spheroid: GRS80
Central Meridian: 13230'00" W (-132.5 in decimal degrees)
Projection Origin: 5900'00" N
1st Standard Parallel: 6140'00" N (61.6666667 in decimal degrees)
2nd Standard Parallel: 6800'00" N
False Easting: 500,000 m
False Northing: 500,000 m

This database is presented as a Microsoft Excel 2000 spreadsheet (.xls) as well as in shapefile (.shp) format. The point shapefile is clipped to the Yukon border while the Excel spreadsheet includes points in the Open Files that overlap into the Northwest Territories.

There are two spatial (shape) files located in this folder. There is a point shapefile which displays all of the geochemical data released with this CD, but it is clipped to the Yukon border. There is also a polygon shapefile that can be used to give the geochemical data spatial context within their geological 'province' within Yukon Territory. Please note that the polygon shapefile is not a true representation of these geological provinces but represents a simplified version and should be used as such. The geochemical point data have been spatially linked to its corresponding simplified geological 'province'. Note that those attributes are only available on the spatial data and do not reside in the Excel Spreadsheet version.
